The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Kicks-off its 2011 Montgomery County Light The Night Walk

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will hold their 2011 Montgomery County Light The Night Walk Kickoff event on Wednesday, September 14 at The Woodlands Resort &
Conference Center.  All registered teams and walkers are invited to attend. Hundreds of walkers, fundraisers, and corporate partners will gather to celebrate the beginning of the upcoming walk
season.

Sunny 99.1 morning radio personality Dana Tyson of The Woodlands, will emcee the event and help kick off the Light the Night Walk 7^th year in the Montgomery County area.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness month. Awareness month is an opportunity to increase the public’s understanding of blood cancers and encourage people to support the funding of research to find cures and education programs to help patients have the best possible outcome through their cancer experience. All of the walkers in attendance are determined to help build awareness about the approximately 957,000 people in the United States living with a blood cancer, and will show their support by fundraising and participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Montgomery County Light The Night^® Walk on Sunday, October 23^rd.

Light The Night, LLS’s annual fundraising walk held in communities throughout the country,  features teams of co-workers, families and friends walking together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer. The Walk, which commemorates lives touched by blood cancers, is a celebration, with music, refreshments and family activities. The 2011 Montgomery County Light The Night Walk will be held at Market Street Central Park in The Woodlands on Sunday, October 23, 2011, 7:00pm.

“Light The Night is the nation’s opportunity to pay tribute to lives touched by blood cancer,” said Billie Sue Parris, Executive Director of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of LLS. “We are grateful to all of our participants for supporting this lifesaving program. The funds raised help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society support leading-edge research and provide much-needed patient services.”

South Montgomery County Shadowbend YMCA Looking for Archives, Memorabilia, Stories and Alumni Members to Celebrate 25th Anniversary

The first YMCA in The Woodlands opened its door on September 21, 1986 at 6145 Shadowbend Place. The South Montgomery County YMCA Staff needs your help as they prepare to celebrate the 25^th Anniversary of the Shadowbend YMCA facility. According to Roxanne Davis, YMCA Community Liaison, “We are searching for archives, memorabilia and stories of the earlier years of the YMCA serving the community. We need photos, articles, t-shirts, sports photos, swim lesson photos, facility photos, staff photos an volunteer photos especially from 1986 – 1993. We also are in need of names and addresses of earlier staff, volunteers and members from that time period who are no longer current members so we can reconnect, celebrate and recognize those that are part of the South Montgomery County YMCA foundation and heritage. The South Montgomery County YMCA has come a long way since the Fall of 1986. Today the YMCA is recognized as the largest YMCA of the Greater Houston Area and one of the largest in the State of Texas serving more than 40,000 families annually helping them grow stronger in spirit, mind and body.  In addition the annual Partner Campaign has reached an all time high providing over $600,000 in scholarship and subsidized programs to more than 5000 area individuals, youth and families in 2011.

The community is invited to a 25^th Anniversary Open House Celebration on Wednesday, September 21^st. There will be lots of free family fun, activities, refreshments, giveaways, VIP tours and
much more with a 25^th theme throughout the day. Families and individuals can join the YMCA on September 21^st for just $25 and receive a special 25^th Anniversary T-shirt. Dear Friends and Neighbors, It took much longer than any of us anticipated, but the House is finally on a regular schedule, hearing bills every day on the floor. It seems every session we feel like we are behind the expected pace, yet we always seem to catch up. The real question is this: is it a good thing or a bad thing if we pass less legislation than normal? On the one hand, fewer laws usually means less intrusive government. On the other hand, good bills and bad bills both tend to die when we fall behind. Like my mother always told me: “There’s no piece of pie sliced so thin that it doesn’t have two sides!”

Spring ISD Kindergarten Roundup Schedule

HOUSTON – Spring ISD elementary schools will hold Kindergarten Roundup in April and May for children who will begin kindergarten in the 2009-10 school year. Kindergarten in Spring ISD is a full-day program for children who will be five years old by Sept. 1, 2009. Registration for kindergarten is voluntary, but once a child enrolls for kindergarten, he or she becomes subject to the compulsory attendance law. That law requires a student to be in attendance at least 90 percent of the days that school is in session in order to receive credit.

Chamber Singers Set to Embark on Spring Tour in Central Texas

“Choral Potpourri and the British Invasion” on Tap for Georgetown, Austin The Lone Star College-Montgomery Chamber Singers, a select choir of 16 voices, will appear on tour in Georgetown and Austin, Texas. The choir will present free, public performances at the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown on Thursday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. and Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Austin on Friday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m.

Laura Wilkinson Through to the Finals

Spring-Klein Chamber of Commerce Announces School House Rock Back to School Drive!

Spring, Texas – The Spring-Klein Chamber of Commerce (SKCC) announced its first ever School House Rock Back to School Drive. The event to be held at the Crabby Daddy Steakhouse on Thursday, August 14, 2008 from 5pm to 7 pm will collect school supplies for less fortunate children in our community. Crabby Daddy Restaurant is located at 25186 1-45 North, 1 block east on Rayford Rd, in Suite 4G, The Woodlands, TX 77386. So come on out and mix and mingle with business colleagues while helping our community’s children return to school with the supplies they need for a good start this school year!

Spring Texas 4th of July Celebrations

The Declaration of Independence brought this great nation into being over 230 years ago. The 4^th of July is more than a day off to eat barbecue, it is a time to reflect on those freedoms and to show our patriotic pride. Here are a list of local events in and around Spring and Klein TX.

Community 4th of July Celebrations

Lexington Woods – 4th of July Parade

The Parade will start at 9:30am at the back swimming pool on Deer Valley.

 

Oakwood Glen-Annual 4th of July Celebration!!!

Beginning at 10:00AM at the back park next to the clubhouse, an American flag-raising ceremony will take place followed by the parade of bicycles which will end at the pool area. Everyone is encouraged to decorate their bicycles to participate in the parade. There will be hot dogs and drinks for all and a moonwalk for the kids! The pool will be open to all members of the community.

 

Spring Creek Oaks

10:15 am Parade vehicles will assemble in the parking lot of the Church at the intersection of TC Jester and Louetta. Following the parade, cool off at the Clubhouse II pool.

 

Terra Nova 4^th of July Parade

10 am Friday, July 4^th. Decorate your bikes, wagons, and cars! All are invited! Come join the fun! Meet in front of the Terra Nova Clubhouse  5200 Woodville. The Klein fire truck will lead the parade from Woodville and Fireside.

Celebrate Fourth of July early with Radio Disney AM 1590 at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion! This free family event takes place at the Pavilion located off of 45 North at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive and Radio Disney will be there for a pre-show from 6:30pm- 8:00pm! The Radio Disney Road Crew will have games, dances and awesome prize giveaways before the show! Then the Houston Symphony takes the stage to perform great American classics and traditional favorites!

July 4^th Celebration at the Park, live Quarter Horse racing beginning at 5 p.m., fantastic holiday-themed dining packages, live entrtainment, family activities and more. Guests are encouraged to bring nonperisiable food items for the Park’s food drive benefiting the Houston Food Bank. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.
