Flu and Pneumonia Immunizations at Mangum-Howell Center

August 23, 2011

Mangum-Howell Center offers flu and pneumonia immunizations Wednesday, September 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday, September 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The flu and pneumonia immunizations are free to individuals 65 years or older who are covered by Medicare Plan B. Please note that HMO plans and Medicare HMO plans do not cover the cost of immunizations.

Individuals 6 months and older can receive the flu vaccination; the flu mist is available for individuals 2 to 49 years of age. Flu immunizations are $10 for children and $18 for adults; pneumonia immunizations are $65.  Payment by cash or check is required at the time immunizations are administered.

All participants are required to sign a medical consent form.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Vaccination is generally not recommended for people who have an active nerve disorder, illness, fever, active respiratory infection, an allergy to eggs or egg products, or an allergy to thimerosal (a preservative used in the vaccine).

Flu immunizations are recommended annually, while pneumonia shots are only required once every five years unless otherwise recommended by a doctor. Pneumonia shots are primarily recommended for people over 65 years of age, especially those with impaired immune systems or chronic respiratory problems. Participants can register at the Center to receive vaccinations.
