Klein ISD Trio Set To Take the Stage in NYC

September 5, 2011

KISD high school students selected to perform in Kissless the Musical

Kissless Trio

Matt Buzonas (right), Sierra Gant (middle) and Ryne Nardecchia (left) will represent Klein ISD and Houston in NYC Off-Broadway premier of Kissless the Musical.

Spring, Texas — Despite different backgrounds and different schools, three Klein ISD high school students realized they had more in common than just a love for the fine arts. All three were not only cast in the upcoming production of Kissless the Musical, but they also overcame obstacles as children ranging from extreme shyness to one even with Tourette syndrome.

Matt Buzonas (Klein Collins), Sierra Gant (Klein High) and Ryne Nardecchia (Klein Oak) will perform in the Off-Broadway production of Kissless the Musical at the 2011 New York Music Theatre Festival. Organized by the Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) Actors Academy, the students will perform six times Sept. 28-Oct.8 in New York City. The three will also have the opportunity to attend master classes taught by Broadway professionals and visit local colleges.

“It’s amazing because not many adults in this profession get this opportunity and for us to be considered is a dream come true,” expressed Nardecchia, who has been acting and singing since the sixth grade. “It gives us a glimpse of what we could be doing for the rest of our lives.”

Kissless the Musical tells the story of two very different people forced to live together for the summer and the unlikely relationship that develops to the dismay of their friends and family. This musical takes an original look at what it is like to be a teen in the 21st century.

The trio was cast last spring over several other talented students for three of the 20 coveted roles in the show. Additionally, former KISD students Michael Chiavone, Tyce Green and Theresa Zimmerman were also cast for the show. The students maintained a rigorous summer schedule, spending six days a week at rehearsal.

Three Houston previews are scheduled before the premieres in New York City. Performances are Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Berry Center in Cypress with an opportunity to meet the cast and production team at a reception following the show for an additional donation. All proceeds will benefit the cast and production. Tickets can be purchased at www.kissless.net.

Houston Family Arts Center’s World Premiere of Death by Design a Comedy with Murder Opens Friday, September 9, 2011

August 16, 2011

HOUSTON – Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) World Premiere of Death by Design, written by acclaimed New York playwright Rob Urbinati and directed by Lisa Garza, opens Friday, September 9, 2011.  Performances are at the HFAC Garza Main Stage located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070.

“One of the goals of HFAC is to produce original works,” said Bob Clark, HFAC Executive Director.  “We’re excited to open our 2011-2012 season with the World Premiere of this uproarious comedy.”

What happens when you mix Noel Coward brilliant wit and a touch of Agatha Christie surprising plots in an English country manor in 1932? A
hilarious murder with multiple suspects! Fortunately, house maid Bridget is more than up to the task of finding out whodunit.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the process in bringing a new work to life,” said Lisa Garza.  “We commissioned Rob Urbinati to write this show and it’s a new classic that people in Houston will be the first to see.”

“My desire in Death by Design was to combine Coward’s brilliant wit with Christie’s surprising plots, and create a work that reflected the best of both writers’ sensibilities,” Rob Urbinati said.  “My sincere hope is that this comedy not only honors what I admire about these two legendary writers, but will extend and expand their styles in this original work that reflects my own taste and sensibility.”

In addition to Lisa Garza, the creative team includes Elaine Edstrom as Assistant Director and Dialect Coach, Ben Mason scenic design, Tracy Clayton sound design and Lindsay Burns costume design.

The talented cast of local Houston actors includes Kathy Drum as Bridgit, Patrick Barton as Edward, Stephanie Morris as Sorel, Matt Elliott as Jack, Joshua Clark as Eric, J. Blanchard as Walter, Hannah McKinney as Victoria, and Chaney Moore as Alice.

Death by Design opens September 9 and runs through September 25, 2011, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM and two Sunday matinees at 3 PM on September 18 and September 25.  The box office opens one hour before each performance, and the house opens 30 minutes before each performance.
