Seminar: Facts and Help for Arthritis

A medical professional from St. Luke’s Hospital at The Vintage  visits Mangum-Howell Center Tuesday, September 27 at 10 a.m. to present helpful facts about arthritis. Sign up for this educational program by stopping by the Center or calling (281) 591-7830.

Mangum-Howell Center is a Precinct 4 community center located at 2500 Frick Road, Houston 77038. Flu and Pneumonia Immunizations at Mangum-Howell Center

Mangum-Howell Center offers flu and pneumonia immunizations Wednesday, September 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday, September 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The flu and pneumonia immunizations are free to individuals 65 years or older who are covered by Medicare Plan B. Please note that HMO plans and Medicare HMO plans do not cover the cost of immunizations.

Individuals 6 months and older can receive the flu vaccination; the flu mist is available for individuals 2 to 49 years of age. Flu immunizations are $10 for children and $18 for adults; pneumonia immunizations are $65.  Payment by cash or check is required at the time immunizations are administered.

All participants are required to sign a medical consent form.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Vaccination is generally not recommended for people who have an active nerve disorder, illness, fever, active respiratory infection, an allergy to eggs or egg products, or an allergy to thimerosal (a preservative used in the vaccine).

Flu immunizations are recommended annually, while pneumonia shots are only required once every five years unless otherwise recommended by a doctor. Pneumonia shots are primarily recommended for people over 65 years of age, especially those with impaired immune systems or chronic respiratory problems. Participants can register at the Center to receive vaccinations.

YMCA Promotes Healthy Living to the Community Through Wellness Seminars

The South Montgomery County  YMCA promotes healthy living to the community through a variety of programs and activities that encourages healthy lifestyles. The Y believes that wellness in spirit, mind and body strengthens our very being and enhances our interactions with others.

Included on the wellness calendar for the end of July is a Series of Seminars.

  • Smart Lunchbox Ideas presented by Registered Dietitian, Kathy Veath, is scheduled for Wednesday, 6-7pm at the Branch Crossing YMCA. This interactive class will help parents find new and easy ideas to pack a healthy and eco-friendly lunch for their kids. The seminar fee is $10 and is open to YMCA Members and the Community.   • Once a month the YMCA offers a FREE Diabetes Seminar which is taught by a certified diabetes educator. The July seminar is scheduled for Thursday, July 28th at the Shadowbend YMCA. The 6pm seminar topic will be Basic Carbohydrate Counting and the 7:30pm topic will be Diabetes 101 and Treatment Options. The Diabetes Seminar is open to YMCA Members and the Community.
