Houston Family Arts Center’s World Premiere of Death by Design a Comedy with Murder Opens Friday, September 9, 2011

August 16, 2011

HOUSTON – Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) World Premiere of Death by Design, written by acclaimed New York playwright Rob Urbinati and directed by Lisa Garza, opens Friday, September 9, 2011.  Performances are at the HFAC Garza Main Stage located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070.

“One of the goals of HFAC is to produce original works,” said Bob Clark, HFAC Executive Director.  “We’re excited to open our 2011-2012 season with the World Premiere of this uproarious comedy.”

What happens when you mix Noel Coward brilliant wit and a touch of Agatha Christie surprising plots in an English country manor in 1932? A
hilarious murder with multiple suspects! Fortunately, house maid Bridget is more than up to the task of finding out whodunit.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the process in bringing a new work to life,” said Lisa Garza.  “We commissioned Rob Urbinati to write this show and it’s a new classic that people in Houston will be the first to see.”

“My desire in Death by Design was to combine Coward’s brilliant wit with Christie’s surprising plots, and create a work that reflected the best of both writers’ sensibilities,” Rob Urbinati said.  “My sincere hope is that this comedy not only honors what I admire about these two legendary writers, but will extend and expand their styles in this original work that reflects my own taste and sensibility.”

In addition to Lisa Garza, the creative team includes Elaine Edstrom as Assistant Director and Dialect Coach, Ben Mason scenic design, Tracy Clayton sound design and Lindsay Burns costume design.

The talented cast of local Houston actors includes Kathy Drum as Bridgit, Patrick Barton as Edward, Stephanie Morris as Sorel, Matt Elliott as Jack, Joshua Clark as Eric, J. Blanchard as Walter, Hannah McKinney as Victoria, and Chaney Moore as Alice.

Death by Design opens September 9 and runs through September 25, 2011, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM and two Sunday matinees at 3 PM on September 18 and September 25.  The box office opens one hour before each performance, and the house opens 30 minutes before each performance.

Kissless the Musical debuts at The New York Musical Theatre Festival!

July 15, 2011

HOUSTON (July 12, 2011) The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) announced today that Kissless the Musical has been selected to perform in the 2011 Festival.  Kissless The Musical with book, music and lyrics by Chance McClain will receive its world premiere at the Festival.

Kissless the Musical, a 2011 New York Musical Theatre Festival Next Link finalist, tells the story of two very different people forced to live together for the summer and the unlikely relationship that develops to the dismay of their friends and family. With a raucous cast of characters including Abercrombie jocks, misfit Goths, brainy nerds, and backwards rednecks, Kissless the Musical tugs on heart strings between belly-laughs. A genre-hopping score paces this completely original look at what it is like to be a teen in the 21st century.

The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) Actors Academy has been selected to cast and perform the show in New York.  “We’re elated and honored to have this opportunity to present Kissless the Musical in The 2011 New Musical Theatre Festival,” said Bob Clark, HFAC Executive Director.  “This is an amazing opportunity for local Houston actors because the other 29 shows in the festival are all being cast by professional actors in New York.”

“I am humbled to have my musical selected for this prestigious Festival,” said Chance McClain, president of Chance Productions.  “I submitted to NYMF as a motivator, like, to force myself into some hard deadlines. When, out of hundreds, it was selected as a finalist, I kinda freaked.”

“I am excited to work with the Houston Family Arts Center,” McClain continued.  “They have been producing family-friendly shows of the highest caliber for the past 6 years and were an ideal fit. Kissless is a family show and HFAC is the best family venue in Houston. Match made in heaven.”

Directed by Sam Brown, Kissless the Musical has choreography by Ellen Dyer, musical direction by Stephen W. Jones, and scenic
design by Lisa Garza.
