ICI Construction Coordinates $4,000 School Supply Donation

August 30, 2011

Houston – Aug. 29, 2011 – ICI Construction has had a long tradition of teaming up with business partners to help school districts where they have completed construction projects together. This help came to Spring ISD this year in the form of a $4,000 donation of school supplies for children who could not afford to purchase supplies for themselves. The 237 school supply packs will be divided between 15 Spring ISD elementary schools.

“ICI’s motivation is to give back to the communities who trust us to build their schools.  We are excited at the opportunity to help area students acquire the tools to succeed in getting a great education,” said Bart Cobb, ICI Construction vice president and project manager.

ICI Construction and its business partners who shared in this donation, Big 4 Steel Services LP and Premium Roofing Systems LLC, recently completed work on  the Spring ISD Child Nutrition and Training Center.

Houston Family Arts Center’s World Premiere of Death by Design a Comedy with Murder Opens Friday, September 9, 2011

August 16, 2011

HOUSTON – Houston Family Arts Center’s (HFAC) World Premiere of Death by Design, written by acclaimed New York playwright Rob Urbinati and directed by Lisa Garza, opens Friday, September 9, 2011.  Performances are at the HFAC Garza Main Stage located in NW Houston at 10760 Grant Road, Houston, TX 77070.

“One of the goals of HFAC is to produce original works,” said Bob Clark, HFAC Executive Director.  “We’re excited to open our 2011-2012 season with the World Premiere of this uproarious comedy.”

What happens when you mix Noel Coward brilliant wit and a touch of Agatha Christie surprising plots in an English country manor in 1932? A
hilarious murder with multiple suspects! Fortunately, house maid Bridget is more than up to the task of finding out whodunit.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the process in bringing a new work to life,” said Lisa Garza.  “We commissioned Rob Urbinati to write this show and it’s a new classic that people in Houston will be the first to see.”

“My desire in Death by Design was to combine Coward’s brilliant wit with Christie’s surprising plots, and create a work that reflected the best of both writers’ sensibilities,” Rob Urbinati said.  “My sincere hope is that this comedy not only honors what I admire about these two legendary writers, but will extend and expand their styles in this original work that reflects my own taste and sensibility.”

In addition to Lisa Garza, the creative team includes Elaine Edstrom as Assistant Director and Dialect Coach, Ben Mason scenic design, Tracy Clayton sound design and Lindsay Burns costume design.

The talented cast of local Houston actors includes Kathy Drum as Bridgit, Patrick Barton as Edward, Stephanie Morris as Sorel, Matt Elliott as Jack, Joshua Clark as Eric, J. Blanchard as Walter, Hannah McKinney as Victoria, and Chaney Moore as Alice.

Death by Design opens September 9 and runs through September 25, 2011, with performances on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 PM and two Sunday matinees at 3 PM on September 18 and September 25.  The box office opens one hour before each performance, and the house opens 30 minutes before each performance.

Dekaney Named Model School by International Center for Leadership in Education

July 19, 2011

HOUSTON – Dekaney High School in Spring ISD has been selected as one of 15 model high schools for 2011 by the International Center for Leadership in Education. The selected schools shared their best practices at the 19th Annual Model Schools Conference June 26 – 29 in Nashville.

“Dekaney High School is proud to have been selected as a 2011 International Center for Leadership in Education Model School. The ICLE designation as a model school is just another step in realizing our district and campus vision. Our school motto is ‘Leading the Way to Excellence,’ and we strive to do that every day,” said Delic Loyde, Dekaney principal.

The Model Schools Conference is the nation’s premier event for K-12 education reform. Each year, the conference attracts thousands of educators, who come to learn about exemplary elementary, middle, high school and career and technical education programs.

Model schools are selected annually based on high student achievement in all subgroups, providing every student with a rigorous and relevant curriculum, personalized instruction, increased student learning time, parent and community involvement, use of data to make instructional decisions, and other best practices. Case studies on Dekaney High School and the other model schools serve as a resource for educators and policymakers.

The process of identifying and analyzing schools is part of a joint initiative of the Successful Practices Network and the International Center and is based on the Learning Criteria to Support 21st Century Learners.

The International Center for Leadership in Education, established in 1991 and located in Rexford, N.Y., is one of the most influential education consulting companies in America. It is best known for identifying and disseminating successful practices to assist all students in achieving higher standards. Willard R. Daggett, Chief Executive Officer of the International Center and his team of consultants have assisted numerous state education agencies and hundreds of schools and districts in their improvement initiatives.
